Most people think of think of fudge as the delicious chocolate
treat that grandmothers are best-known for giving, but it’s
actually the term used for the result of mixing sugar, butter,
and milk together. The confection is then beaten until it gets
the smooth, creamy consistency that it is known for.
There are many different types of fudge, including:
• Chocolate
• Vanilla
• Caramel (or penuche)
• Marble (three types of chocolate, including white)
Although there are some variations on the origin of fudge, many
believe that it was the result of an accident. In 1886, folklore
says that an American candy-maker messed (or “fudged”)
up a batch of caramel, but the new sweet was so popular that it
quickly became a staple of sweet shops. This also explains that
the fudge was originally caramel-flavored.
