Fudge FAQs

Q: What is fudge?
A: Although fudge is often associated with chocolate, it is actually the result of mixing sugar, butter, and milk together. The confection is then beaten until it gets the smooth, creamy consistency that it is known for. The original fudge was caramel flavored.

Q: What’s the origin of fudge?
A: Some people think that fudge was created by mistake. In 1886, an American candy maker bungled (or “fudged”) a batch of caramel, but the new product was so good that the treat quickly caught on, becoming the candy staple that we know today.

Q: What is penuche?
A: Penuche is caramel-flavored fudge, sometimes referred to as “original flavor.” Penuche often has nuts in it.
